Music Appreciation

"A man should hear a little music . . . every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul."   ~ Goethe

Appreciating the Great Composers
by Katrina Lybbert

I have created a plan to share the music of many of the great composers with my children.  The book I have used as my spine in planning this study is Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers by Patrick Kavanaugh.  This plan takes 5 years to cycle through by covering 4 composers each year during Terms 2 & 4.  This study works well with children from ages 8 - 12, but younger and older children can benefit as well.  We study each composer for 4 - 5 weeks by reading first from Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers, then from other well written biographies.  We also choose up to 5 selections of music, composed by the composer we are studying, to listen to.  As we progress through this study you will find our lesson plans and resources for each composer by following the links in the table below.

Year 1: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart
Year 2: Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin
Year 3: Liszt, Wagner, Gounod, Franck
