Poetry for 2010

"Blessings be with them, and eternal praise, Who gave us nobler loves, and nobler cares! - The Poets, who on earth have made us heirs, Of truth and pure delight by heavenly lays."   ~ William Wordsworth

Poetry Overview for 2010

It is highly recommended that you keep a record of your favorite poems studied.  Keep a poetry notebook to copy them into.  This will become your own personal book of selected poems.  You can add to it over the years and include poems by any poet, and even the poems you write yourself.

Mountaineer

Find poems in the Church Magazines(Ensign, New Era, or Friend).  If you use the search function in the gospel library for the magazines, use the key word "poetry" and you will find many.

  • Read 1 poem from a Church Magazine each week.
  • Copy 1 of the poems you enjoyed into your poetry notebook each month.
Inspirator

Select a book of poetry of your own choice.  It can be a collection or anthology of poems by a variety of poets.  If you wish... you could also select poems from a variety of poetry books, or even search for poems on the internet.  The main things is to read from a variety of poets, not just one.

  • Read 2 - 3 poems from your poetry book(s) each week.
  • Copy 2 of the poems you enjoyed into a poetry notebook each month.
  • Remember to complete the Mountaineer assignments as well.
Adventurer

Choose 1 poet to study in detail (both the life and poetry of this individual).  This can be any poet you have an interest in.

  • Read 10 poems by this poet each month.
  • Copy 1 of the poems you enjoyed into a poetry notebook each month.
  • Write a report on the life of the chosen poet.
  • Remember to complete the Mountaineer & Inspirator assignments as well.
Summiteer

Choose an additional poet to study in detail (both the life and poetry of this individual).  This can be any poet you have an interest in.  You will also explore writing poems of your own.

  • Read 10 poems by this poet each month.
  • Copy 1 of the poems you enjoyed into a poetry notebook each month.
  • Write a report on the life of the chosen poet.
  • Write six original poems of your own.
