A Mother's Educational Course for Latter-day Saints

History & Geography for 2006

“It is good for men to be taught in the history and laws of nations, to become acquainted with the principles of justice and equity, with the nature of disease and the medicinal properties of plants, etc.  But there is no need of their being without the knowledge of God, for in fact every branch of true knowledge known to man has originated in God, and men have come in possession of it from his word or from his works... All the intelligence which men possess on earth, whether religious, scientific, or political - proceeds from God.  Every good and perfect gift proceeds from him, the fountain of light and truth, wherein there is no variableness nor shadow of turning.  The knowledge of the human system has proceeded from the human system itself, which God has organized.”

-- John Taylor

Histoy/Geography Overview for 2006

History Focus: Reformation & Restoration

In October 2005 General Conference, Elder Robert D. Hales gave a very inspiring talk.  It is from his talk that we have based our history study for this year.  It is amazing to see how the Lord prepared the way for the restoration of the Gospel.  To fully benefit from the study assignments please read Elder Hales talk before proceeding:

"Preparations for the Restoration and the Second Coming..." by Elder Robert D. Hales

1. Read the assigned articles... there may be more than one each month.

2.  Follow the links to explore the chosen topics for each month.

3.  Read Prelude to the Restoration from cover to cover.

4.  Read Fire in the Bones as the main biography for this subject area.  You can explore more biographies as you find them in your research.

5.  Keep a notebook of your findings.  You may also wish to include a timeline in your notebook.

This study of history will be mostly up to you.  As you research, and find resources, take advantage of what is available to you as well as what interests you.  Share your findings with the list so we can all benefit.

Geography Focus:

A) Book of Mormon Lands

It is a fascinating study to see where Book of Mormon events may have actually taken place.  While we can not know for sure, there is some exciting evidence out there that is worth learning about.  Learning Book of Mormon geography can help make the scriptures come alive and enhance your study.  For this topic we have links to articles online.  You are also welcome to explore this topic on your own.  Some optional resources were listed above.  Please share any other resources you find interesting with the list.

B) Country of choice from Family History

As part of our focus this year, we are hoping to strengthen our families.  To bring your family closer together and to learn more about your ancestors, we suggest you choose a country from your ancestry to study with your family.  Learning the geography and culture of a country that is special to you can be a very rewarding experience.  You may adopt some new traditions and strengthen your family in the process.

A study of geography should include mapwork.  You will also want to keep a notebook and write down your findings.
